MasterPeace will be the most heartwarming global peace project ever, as a result of an intensive East-West cooperation, supported by NGOs, companies, cities, social entrepreneurs and you. MasterPeace will develop several attractive peace-building projects, including a mesmerizing concert in Cairo on Peace Day 2014, where artists from all the world’s major conflict areas will perform to promote togetherness, international collaboration and the reduction of (armed) conflicts. The concert will be an exclusive reward for people who actively supported peace-building activities in the years before Peace Day 2014. Because peace-building is a verb. MasterPeace was officially launched on Peace Day 2011. MasterPeace.
“Creating peace. Together”. What will you do?
WHY MASTERPEACE?
There are many reasons to start a large-scale, new, fresh, innovative, bottom-up peace initiative supported by the ‘East’ and the ‘West’. The number of wars is growing and the number of fugitives due to conflicts is growing. In conflict areas in particular, women and children (child soldiers) are often abused heavily, human rights and democracy are severely under pressure, and the realisation of the UN Millennium Development Goals (which focus on education, combating poverty, and equal opportunities, among other things) lags behind four times as much on average. And last but not least non-proliferation treaties on nuclear arms are largely ignored.
One might expect the prevention of conflicts to be high on everyone’s agenda. One might expect world leaders to fight to achieve the UN Millennium Development Goals and halt the proliferation of nuclear arms. One might expect everyone to be aware of the International Day of Peace and many to set to work after Obama’s great speech in Cairo (June 2009). One might expect a huge active movement for peace to announce itself, because after all peace-building is a verb. But none of it has happened. Only the number of people that encourages conflict between cultures and faiths seems to be growing.
All this while there are many beautiful peace initiatives and hard workers ‘on the ground’ in conflict areas. Hero’s who dare to choose for instruments instead of weapons. These initiatives and people deserve much more support and visibility. With modern campaigning and a central role for music, art, sport and (new) media so much positivism and new engagement could be mobilised amongst citizens and businesses worldwide! How inspiring it could be to bring people together on a large scale and get them to work on behalf of peace without needing a tragedy first. Simply on the basis of will and connectedness.
